Revolutions. They are everywhere being created by some of the most unlikely characters. Disruptors of the status quo. Creators of positive social change. These are my heroes and a large reason why I wrote, “How to Create a Revolution: A Step-By-Step Guide to History’s Social Influencers.” I wanted to share with everyone the reason why this all began. This book was originally supposed to be focused on the founding fathers and the American Revolution. I do live in Boston, you know. However, the story below is what changed it all. A moment in time spurred a how sequence of events and ignited a fire in my belly. Check it out: Before we begin… In 2010, I was asked to speak at the 140 Character Conference in Detroit. I spent the morning before my speech walking around the city, trying to get to know the people and tap into the energy around me. To be honest, I still wasn’t sure what I wanted to speak on and was in search of some inspiration. What I found would not only be the inspiration to speak that day, anything else. After an hour-long stroll through the barren streets of downtown, I came across [...]

Inspiration. Quick and Dirty. That is what the Ignite series is all about. You have 5 minutes to share your ideas while your 20 (yes, only 20) slides whiz by every 15 seconds. So, you better be on your game. Sounds like fun, right? Well, it was a blast. I had the pleasure of presenting “How to Create a Revolution” a few weeks back. I wanted to focus on the initiatives we found while on the Our Revolution road trip last year. See what we found while on the road. If you would prefer the transcript: here you go: Today I am here to talk to you about how to start a revolution. The mere mention of the word revolution is incendiary and thought provoking. When we think about revolutions, our minds quickly go to the history books and events like the American Revolution, The Protestant Reformation, Ghandi’s Peace Protests and The Civil Rights Movement to name a few examples. Even today we see amazing ground shifting events like the Arab Spring and Occupy. All revolutions spurred by groups of people dissatisfied with the current status quo. So, they organized. Individuals bonded by one core belief. But what exactly is [...]

We live in a world of constant change. The events of 2011 have exhibited that all too well. As in life, change comes in cycles: birth, growth, death, and renewal. Understanding these cycles can help us thrive in change, rather than fear it. Though change can be painful, it is a source of creativity, innovation and transformation. While working on my upcoming book, How to Create a Revolution, I created the Revolutionary Change Cycle. Take a Look: During my research for the book, I found a transformation system developed by family therapist, Virginia Satir. Divided into five segments, her system illustrates how the family unit can transform the status quo into something new. While not related, it strengthens the correlation of change behavior amongst all group dynamics. Here’s the deal: Feel free to share. Tweet it, Google +, Facebook it, or post it on your own site. I would love your thoughts. The Revolutionary Change Cycle by Ja-Nae Duane is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported License. Last week, we began Revolution! Solutions: The Fall of Healthcare. Part of this project is Revolution! Solutions, a 30 day collaborative exchange of ideas around a specific storyline. We are all in this together and the more we brainstorm solutions, the more likely we will be to find solutions that work! Click here to play the game. One of last week’s submissions was by The Economist. Here is their solution: Do you want a sane, sustainable solution to the health care crisis? And the Medicare/Medicaid “crisis”? Single-payer Medicare for all. Eliminate the for-profit private health insurance industry and replace it with a universal, public non-profit insurance program that covers ever man, woman and child from cradle to grave. In other words, just expand Medicare to cover everyone and cut out all of the other middle men who take their respective cuts out of our health care dollars at every stage of the current game. Currently 35 cents of every health care dollar goes to pay for unnecessary administrative overhead due solely to the multiple private bureaucracies of private insurers and providers fighting over who is (or isn’t) going to get paid how much for what. In a $2.5 trillion/year health [...]

The news is abuzz with talk of revolutions. We are witnessing a period in history where people are harnessing their voices and mobilizing in huge numbers. Newer technologies are showcasing events on a much larger stage, and eager eyewitnesses are spawning a generational shift in how history gets reported. Far removed from news desks and coiffed anchors, the grit of the struggle and its human faces are indelible. Journalism itself is changing. Read Shel Israel’s post on braided journalism or Ulises Mejias’ post on the dangers of branding a revolution. For a full recap of the situation at present, read this Mashable post. But it’s important to remember that while the medium may be shifting, the universal message is not. Revolutions still bloom according to certain conditions. So how do we re-tool our idea of revolutions based on this new model, while minding the pillars of nation building? How can we ensure the circumstances are right for pushing our own revolutions? Here are things we can learn from Tunisia, Egypt, and Iran. -Say it Out Loud, Not Louder: The act of saying something out loud actualizes an idea. Sometimes you find that few agree, but often the resentment and discontent that has [...]

Life has a funny way of teaching us the lessons we are supposed to learn. As I strolled through the silent snowy streets today, I realized that these lessons I have learned over the passed few months were always there waiting for me. I had to laugh out loud (and then looked around to see if anyone saw this woman walking in the middle of the street laughing to herself), because life is so simple that sometimes we forget. We forget what we are suppose to learn, but also what we’re meant to teach others. So, it’s time. Each of us have the power to change the world. Everything you do sets the course for a series of events. Some will directly impact you and some will not. But they still come from you. And that is why I need your help. Starting in February, I’m launching Revolution! Revolution! is an interactive transmedia project that will empower each and every one of us to help facilitate change in some way, no matter how small. Whether its change at home, in your community, globally or just within you- you will have the tools you need to be the change you wish [...]
