NFC-moo

Small Businesses are constantly struggling with ways to scale and market. Near Field Communication (NFC) is bridging this gap with the help of Moo, making it this week’s Game Changer. Check it out: But what do you think? Do you think that devices like the IPhone will be more likely to adapt if companies like Moo are beginning to use the technology? Or do you think that NFC will be caught in the usual battles, that could take years to iron out? I would love to hear from you. Want Ja-Nae to review your product or service? Contact her. A Game Changer: The Publishing Industry and How to Start Self-Publishing

publishing-a

What does it take to become an author? I guess it depends on who you ask. Many people have tried the traditional route of writing book proposals and manuscripts with the hopes that their book would be picked up by a publisher. I have to be honest, that never occurred to me when I self-published my first book, “How to Start Your Business with $100” in 2010. I saw that there was an opportunity to connect directly with an audience that needed this book and figured that was the best way to go about it. And I am not alone. There are a ton of self-published authors who have done the same thing. Luckily, the publishing landscape is vastly changing and allowing for more and more self-published authors to shine through. Check out my Game Changer segment on the ever-changing publishing industry and what it means for authors, as well as consumers. There are many advantages and disadvantages to going either route. Something that I have been struggling with as a self-published author is whether or not I should continue to revamp the second addition of “How to Start Your Business with $100“. Recently a traditionally published book came out [...]

Game Changer: The Rise of the Hacker

game-changer

The hacker. Glorified in many ways by movies such as The Matrix. But with over 12 million Apple UDIDs stolen and Mitt Romney’s tax returns being held for ransom, one has to ask whether or not any of our data is safe within the cloud. And the bigger question becomes: What can we do about it? Check out my Game Changer episode where I talk about how the rise of the hacker is changing the game on online security and accountability.   Related Posts Nikola Tesla: Birthday Boy and the Untold Story Game Changer: Transmedia Storytelling for the Little Guy Game Changer: Homeless Hotspots, Street Treat & Next Steps

Nikola Tesla: Birthday Boy and the Untold Story

nikola-tesla

Nikola Tesla. Who is he? Do kids these days know how much this man contributed to science and technology? I figured I would ask. My brother is visiting me while he goes to camp to build robots and remote control cars; two things invented by Tesla. I asked my little brother today if he had ever heard of him. Looking over his bowl of coco-puffs, he shrugged and mumbled, “Nah.” It made me realize that on Telsa’s birthday, this would be a great opportunity to highlight one of my favorite geeks and game changers! Here is a list of some of Tesla’s inventions: 1. Alternating Current — Alternating currents really caused quite a stir at the 1893 World’s Expo in Chicago. At this point, a war on how electricity would be produced and distributed was on between Tesla and Edison. Yet, despite all the feuding, it is Tesla’s system that currently provides power generation and distribution to North America. 2. Light – Tesla invented how light can be harnessed and distributed. At the World’s Fair, Tesla took glass tubes and bent them into famous scientists’ names, in effect creating the first neon signs. 3. X-rays —  X-rays, like so many of [...]

Game Changer: How to Be a Data Journalist

data journalism

Big Data. What it is exactly? It is a general term used to describe the enormous amount of unstructured  data that companies create on a daily basis.  If you think of your own daily internet usage, then you can begin to image how much a company can generate. With “Big Data” and the need to report on it on the rise, this weeks Game Changer is Data Journalism. Data Journalism stems from the growing realization that there is a lot of value in finding patterns in news-related information. Recently, we saw the launch of an ebook that explores the field, entitled: The Data Journalism Handbook. Check out my Pulse Network segment on data journalism and its importance. So, do you want to be a Data Journalist? Here is a flowchart from the handbook to get you started:   What are your thoughts on data journalism? How do you think it’s changing the game? We would love to hear from you. Game Changer: Transmedia Storytelling for the Little Guy

game changer-janae

Game Changers. They come in all shapes and sizes. Today on my Game Changer segment on The Pulse Network, I dug into the definition of transmedia and how brands are using it today. Check it out: But there is a major misconception when it comes to transmedia storytelling. Many believe that you have to be associated with a film or a large brand. That just isn’t the case. You can be a small business, an entrepreneur, a group, non-profit, volunteer organization…you name it. And for you “little guys” out there, here are three ways to get started: What is Your Story: Before you can do anything, you must decide what your story is about. What is the journey? What obstacle(s) do your “characters” face and how do they overcome them? Pick 3 Entry Points: Once you have your story in place, pick three entry points for into your story. These entries points can be a segment of time, a sub storyline that compliments the world you’re trying to create, or the introduction of a supplementary character. Pick 3 Channels: For each entry point, use a different channel to tell the story. Maybe a piece of the story is told through video, where [...]

Game Changer: Homeless Hotspots, Street Treat & Next Steps

Game Changer, homeless hotspots, caused controversy at SXSW this year. Check out my Pulse Network segment on the topic: Despite what you think about the project, it has opened up the question of, “now what?” Here are 3 projects and next steps to consider: Street Treat: Though overshadowed by the SXSW Homeless Hotspot story, Street Treat is plugging away as an alternative to giving a homeless person the opportunity to make money by selling iced cream. Mark Horvath just wrote a great article on the program. Check it out. Partner for Employment: Many individuals who are homeless want to work. Some have the skills you’re looking for and some may not. Either way, they are just lacking the opportunity. Have your company partner with your local homeless shelter to create that opportunity and a training program. Community Gardens: Community Gardens are a fantastic communal focal point and an effective crime prevention strategy. Why not employee the homeless to help tend the garden and run a farm stand? This is a great way to pay someone, feed them, and make your neighborhood safer. What ways do you think we could employee the homeless? Do you know anyone who is working on something [...]

Three Things SXSW Can Learn from the Badgeless Movement

south by southwest

As usually, my head was spinning upon my return from South by Southwest this year. The sheer intensity of the conference could do that to you. If you have never been, it is hard to explain the sensory overload that occurs, no matter what your level of participation. As I reflect on the most important thing I got out of the conference this year, I would have to say that it was the Badgeless 2012 movement that I stumbled upon. As someone who was going to SXSW badgeless, I want to see if others were badgeless as well. What I found really astounded me. Yesterday during my Game Changer segment for the Pulse Network, I highlighted some of the badgeless and their reasons why they were badgeless. Check it out: Whether the Badgeless Movement continues or not, there are three key takeaways that I think SXSW can learn from this: Listen: If so many veterans are going badgeless, then there is something that has gone astray with the conference. This is a fantastic opportunity for SXSW to listen to what its loyal attendees are looking for within the conference. Open Innovation: The veterans of SXSWi feel that the conference is losing [...]
