I have been thinking a lot lately about how we learn lessons and grow from them. I have also been thinking a lot about what stops us from making much needed change in our lives. Of course, I immediately think of fear and its ability to keep us safe, from the unknown, as well as ourselves. I was in yoga yesterday (a class I was really looking forward to all day) and was having difficulty staying with poses, even down dog. I felt uncomfortable, slightly irritated with myself and was sweating out all water I consumed that day. At first, when I felt the discomfort in these poses, I would begin to wiggle and move out of them. Frustrated with myself, I would try to gently come back into them, remembering to breathe. My breathe made me think of other uncomfortable situations that I have had recently (ones that we all have had), including: Necessary conversations Conflict that we try to avoid Our reaction to others bad behavior How do we normally act when we are in an uncomfortable situation? My first response is to get out of there. How about you? It was in that moment, I realized that [...]

Faith. What is it exactly? Where does it come from and why is it so important to so many people? I thought a lot about faith this past weekend as I was putting together my sermon for the First Church of Chestnut Hill. While preparing, I came across this great Patrick Overton poem. He reflects in his poem “Faith”: When you come to the edge of all the light you have And take the first step into the darkness of the unknown, You must believe one of two things will happen: There will be something solid for you to stand upon, or you will be taught how to fly. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you did not know what the outcome would be or how you were going to get through it? We have all been there. Am I right? Many times in our lives we are faced with the unknown, the uncertainty of a future that we cannot see. But how can we have faith that it will all work out? A lot of people would love to answer your questions for you. However, what they will give you are their answers. “We will tell [...]

Life can be fun, but have its challenges along the way. Am I right? Whether you’re starting a business, raising a family, or relocating to a new city, at times it take a large amount of strength and faith just to put one foot in front of the other. I know, I’ve been there. We all have from time to time. I was down in Boston’s North End last week and came across the church of St. Leonard. As I was walking with my canoli, I began to wonder “What do people believe in? What keeps them going when things seem hopeless or a struggle?” Though I know what keeps me going every day, no matter what life hands to me, I would like to share two other stories with you: Dave had had a home-based business (T-shirt designer) for over 3 years. He considered himself successful making $27K a year. However, when the recession hit, orders were canceled and a major client did not pay. Needless to say, Dave’s business was hit pretty hard. But is the great thing about Dave. He knew that this was a make or break moment for his business. So, what did he do? [...]
