The Agents of Change Tour Announcement and How to Be in My Next Book

agents of change

Adventure, baby! Bring it on! As many of you know, our last tour was life altering for me. It resulted in: 1. Meeting some amazing people who have become great friends. 2. The creation of the Our Revolution, a social good community. Which I am happy to say is a few thousand strong, as well as the How to Create a Revolution book (a guide to creating social change). 3. A chance meeting with a guy who reviewed my first book, How to Start Your Business with $100, that ended in a marriage proposal. Yeah, this awesome: And trust me, I could not have done that past tour without you guys. You are my backbone and the reason why I do these things. You show me that it is needed (and wanted). I cannot tell you what that means to me. So, I am excited to announce that we headed on the road again and embarking on The Agents of Change Tour! About the Tour Mission: To restore creativity to the soul of the world! The Agents of Change tour is a year-long tour exploring the impact of creativity and collaboration on local communities, artists, and entrepreneurs. The tour nurtures [...]

The Artist: Confession and Time Sensitive Surprise

janae-revolutionary

I grew up performing. As a young girl, I would put on shows with my best friend in her backyard. I would spend hours on the phone with my friend Jill thinking of lyrics to our song that would be a hit. I even sang at the White House while still in high school. You can ask my mom how many times she would have to come into my room and ask me to stop practicing on any given day. I wouldn’t stop. I loved it too much. That love continued into college, where I paid my way working 4 jobs, created my own major at Northeastern University in collaboration with New England Conservatory. I had double the course load of anyone I knew, but I didn’t care. I was constantly performing and honing my craft. I was exploring new ways to create shows, and even co-produced (and performed ) in the John Coltrane Memorial Concert. At such a young age, I was performing with musical giants and had no idea how I got to be so fortunate. But as time went on, so did my education. Though I had more and more opportunities come my way, the demand to [...]

The Traveler: Wine Libraries, Secret Gems, and the London Reboot

tower bridge-janae-duane

London. What a great town. Steve and I both spoke at the Social Media Strategies Summit out there in the beginning of November, and though this post is a little late, I really wanted to share some of the highlights. Where to Stay in London Though most of our nights were taken care of, there were one or two where we were on our own. We used Air B n B and stayed Naz. Naz was great and his little garden house was exactly what we needed for two nights. To check out his place, click here. Where to Travel I never really do the touristy thing. I like to live amongst the locals and find the best kept secrets. However, there are times when you need to see a little more of the countryside. So, Steve and I decided to venture off and explore. Stonehenge I had never seen Stonehenge before and have been fascinated by it as a child. However, on this cold, dreary morning where the wind whips through you as fast as a high-speed train, I didn’t hang around for very long. It was still great to see the original LEGO set. Bath Bath completely and utterly took me by surprise. [...]

The Traveler: Underground Detroit and the Rebuilding of a City

the-traveler-detroit

It had been a year and a year since I was last in Detroit for the Our Revolution Road trip. I really wanted to see how the city had changed. But more importantly, I wanted to see the heartbeat of this amazing city: it’s people. Every adventure has to begin somewhere. Mine began in Grand Rapids where I had a meeting in a few days. I was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful it was near the airport. Beautiful or not, I was eager to get on the road. When I first arrived in the city, I immediately noticed two things. First, there were less abandoned houses. In their place was construction. But more interesting to me, were the number of blighted houses that had art on them. What was once forgotten has become someone’s canvas. Neighborhoods have become resurrected and seeds of the future of sprung. Many pieces from old structures are being refurbished and reused. My friend Dominic, found these within his attic hiding under layers of dust. With a little love, they look great and are ready to become a permanent asset to the house in its current iteration. There are bigger initiatives at work within the city [...]

The Traveler: The Berkshires and Massachusetts in the Fall

The road to the carriage house.

I spent the weekend being the traveler. Since we had a guest from out of town, this was my opportunity to truly explore the Berkshires during the fall. Here are some of the highlights: Edith Wharton’s The Mount I stepped on these grounds and felt like I had come home. Wharton was a Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist (first woman to win), short story writer, and designer. The Mount stands as one of her creations and is magnificent.     The Berkshires We then wandered through neighboring towns and came across a few things, including a gingerbread house. And of course, if you are going to finish a day of sightseeing, why not do it over a glass of wine at Nashoba Brook Winery while watching this view:   Related Posts Adventures to Fantasy Island and Lessons from the Surf The Traveler: How to Haggle like a Pro How to Live Anywhere and Love It   Image Credit: Typewriter: http://pinterest.com/EHTaniguchi/ All other images: Ja-Nae Duane

Adventures to Fantasy Island and Lessons from the Surf

welcome-to-fantasy-island

I just got back from a fantastic trip to Kauai for my sister’s wedding. I’m never one to take a vacation to a tropical destination, so this was a huge new experience for me. Here are some of the highlights of the trip, including: No worries. We promise that we didn’t cause any trouble with the TSA officials. At least none that we can speak of. A beautiful beach where I learned how to scuba. I wasn’t really keen on my instructor at first. She wanted us to get used to breathing under water through our equipment. Though I could do it for a little bit, it was extremely hard to breathe. I tried it several times before I told her I was having issues. Come to find out, she forgot to turn my tank on. However, everyone was incredibly impressed with my lung capacity. It’s awesome to be an opera singer. These are the Wailua Falls that were featured in the beginning of Fantasy Island. All I had running through my head was, “The plane boss, the plane.” It never got old. Each beach looked like this. This was the beach where we had our surf lesson. Surfing was [...]

Leadership Qualities and the One They Missed

leadership-education

Yesterday, I wrote a post on the role that creativity plays within leadership education. On G+, Bill Hipsher asked the following question: I wonder how the chart you shared would look for smaller company CEO’s who don’t have “Global Thinking” as a factor? Could that be replaced by “Local Thinking/Influence/Relationships” for smaller local businesses? Great question, Bill. Here is my response: And just in case you wanted to see my artwork: Related Posts Growing Ideas The Leaders: 3 Lessons from the Girl Scouts How to Recognize Opportunity

The Traveler: How to Haggle like a Pro

the traveler travel channel ja-nae janae

In many countries, if you are looking to buy something then you are expected to haggle. It is a part of the culture. It is much easier than you may think to get a deal and According to America’s Research Group, consumers who haggle are successful 80 percent of the time, and not just while traveling. So, are you ready to start haggling? Here are 9 Ways to Haggle Like a Pro: 1. Do Research: If you are buying something off of a vendor cart, more often than not there will be one or more cart that has the same item. Shop around and see who has the best price before you start to negotiate. 2. Be Nice: Shop owners remember who’s friendly to the staff and are more willing to haggle with someone who has been pleasant than someone who has been rude. Remember, a smile goes a long way. 3. Know the Inventory: By observing the inventory in a market or store, as well as what people are drawn to, you can easily see what sells and what doesn’t sell as well.  The biggest deal will come from the items that don’t fly off the shelf or are not [...]

How to Live Anywhere and Love It

air bnb the freelancer how to live anywhere

We all dream about living somewhere else, right? Even if we love where we live now, it is the romantic notion of trying something new, something exotic. Am I right? I posed this question on Facebook this morning, “If you could move anywhere, where would you go and why?” Here are some of the answers: “I live where I most want to be. Not sure why anyone would do otherwise.” -Michael Troiano Though I agree with Mr. Michael, I am somewhat nomadic in nature and like to test out places before I decide to hang my hat and call somewhere home. Why? before I commit to a significant move, I want to know that I can be equally as happy in my new location as I am in Boston. For the freelancers out there, here are 3 ways to discover new cities and which location would make you happiest. I. Air BnB: The beauty of being a freelancer is that you can work from anywhere. So, why not sublet your place out and try out a new city for a month. I love using Air BnB because of the built in community component, rating system, as well as the variety [...]
